Strengthening Industry Foundations: BOXPLUS Implements COA UDM_PLUS Standard API

Recently, Shanghai BOXPLUS Information Technology Co., Ltd. (BOXPLUS) officially adopted the COA UDM_PLUS standard data interface (API). This implementation enables the real-time transmission of data collected by IBOX smart container devices to multiple clients, seamlessly connecting data flow between IoT devices (IBOX), platforms, and end users. The COA UDM_PLUS standard is an optimized version of the Container Owners Association Unified Data Model (COA UDM), in which BOXPLUS participated as a co-developer. The enhanced standard was officially released at the end of 2022 and aims to further solidify the foundation for standardized development within the industry.

The Container Owners Association (COA), established in November 2004, is an international organization representing the shared interests of container owners. The COA is dedicated to promoting the establishment of industry standards and fostering consensus for advancing the container sector worldwide.

In June 2021, the COA released the COA UDM for Reefer Container Data Exchange Formats data model (COA UDM), developed by the COA Reefer Container Information Technology Working Group. The model aims to facilitate the exchange of reefer unit information in a unified manner, unaffected by equipment type or manufacturer. This eliminates interoperability barriers within the industry, breaks down data silos between different reefer equipment, and enables the development of third-party applications and value-added services based on reefer container data. The successful development of the COA UDM represents a significant milestone in the container industry's journey toward digitalization and standardization.

COA Secretary-General Patrick Hicks commended BOXPLUS for adopting the COA UDM_PLUS standard API. He stated:

"BOXPLUS, as a COA member, has consistently played an active role in developing and implementing industry standards for smart container devices. From 2020 to 2021, BOXPLUS was deeply involved in formulating the COA UDM standard. This latest effort to advance and optimize the standard data model through practical industry applications demonstrates remarkable productivity and creativity. It is a crucial step in accelerating the standardization process within the container industry."

The COA UDM_PLUS standard API adopted by BOXPLUS retains the original COA UDM model for reefer unit data while adding valuable new features for IBOX smart devices. These include data on location, acceleration, door status, and other commercially significant information for end users. This ensures consistency with the standard while minimizing technical complexity. Additional measures, such as multi-layered authorization verification and automatic email notifications in case of API interaction failures, further enhance the security, timeliness, and accuracy of data transmission.
